Vol. 255 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aer Lingus Aircraft Utilisation.

13.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Aer Lingus are contemplating a merger with another airline; and, if so, if he will give details.

Aer Lingus is constantly discussing with airlines around the world possible co-operative arrangements in relation to utilisation of aircraft or co-ordination of sales, but there are no discussions being carried on at present in relation to mergers or similar arrangements of a fundamental kind.

Mr. O'Donnell

Could the Minister say whether or not any possibility of leasing aircraft in the off season as was hitherto done has now been ruled out and that the only possible alternative is to explore the possibility of some working arrangement? Is that the reason why this has arisen? Apparently the leasing arrangements for the Jumbo Jets has fallen through. Is there any possibility of concluding leasing arrangements during the off season?

That seems to be a separate question.

The leasing arrangements have fallen through due to the backing out of the contracting party to the original arrangement. There are further arrangements or possible arrangements being explored very actively at the moment by Aer Lingus. This is strict commercial business which they are naturally seeking to explore to the fullest advantage for themselves.

Would the Minister not agree that it has attractive possibilities?

That is part of the overall context.
