Vol. 255 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Hire Purchase Debts.

41.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the increasing number of complaints by persons who purchase cars, particularly by private sale, and who subsequently become aware of outstanding hire purchase debts on such cars; and if he will introduce legislation to prevent these frauds.

I have not received any complaints of this kind. I understand that a prospective purchaser on payment of a small fee can establish beforehand through a firm known as Hire-Purchase Information Ltd., whether there is an outstanding hire-purchase debt. I have no reason to think that the introduction of special legislation is called for.
