Vol. 255 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Employment.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the present insecurity of employment in the Shannon Free Airport Estate, he will make a statement as to the possibility of future redundancies; and if he will indicate what steps are being taken to rectify the situation.

Industry at Shannon, in common with industry generally throughout the world, is experiencing some of the effects of the current world-wide recession. It is hoped that this situation will before long show signs of recovery. Meanwhile the Shannon Free Airport Development Co. Ltd., is continuing to pursue its policy of providing increased opportunities for employment and a strong community development at Shannon. The company is of opinion that new projects under negotiation, together with increased employment in existing operations at Shannon, will more than offset any redundancies.
