Vol. 255 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Central Communications Office.

61.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is yet in a position to indicate when it will be possible to provide better offices and conditions for the members of the Garda Síochána who are engaged on central communications at Dublin Castle.

I have asked the Office of Public Works to arrange for the provision of new accommodation for the staff of the communications centre. I am not yet in a position to say when the new offices will be erected. It is hoped to place an order shortly for the provision of new equipment for the centre.

(Cavan): Is it a fact that members of the Garda Síochána in the Castle are at present housed in offices which have been vacated by civil servants because they are regarded as unsuitable? Is he further aware that the conditions under which these members of the force are working are absolutely deplorable?

I agree that the conditions are not of a high standard and that is why we have made urgent arrangements to try to have new offices provided for them as soon as possible.

(Cavan): Might I suggest to the Minister that he would keep up the pressure on the Board of Works, or whoever is dealing with this, to have the accommodation provided as quickly as possible?
