Vol. 255 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Dumping.

85.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that refuse from Clarenbridge, Craughwell and Oranmore, County Galway, is being dumped at Athenry to the annoyance of local residents; and what action it is proposed to take in the matter.

86.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that refuse is being dumped in Athenry because of an order he sent to the Galway County Manager; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 85 and 86 together.

The order which I made requiring the Galway County Council to undertake a contract for the removal of house refuse from premises in the village of Oranmore did not require the refuse to be placed in the Athenry dump as implied in Question No. 86. It is for the local authority to decide on a location for dumping any refuse collected by them. I am aware that certain residents in Athenry, whom I have met, raised objection to the deposit of the refuse collected in Oranmore, Clarenbridge and Craughwell in the Athenry dump. The county manager is seeking an alternative site for a dump and is to meet the Athenry residents again in about a month. In the meantime the objections of the Athenry residents have been withdrawn. I have asked the local authority to expedite the provision of an alternative site.

Might I ask the Minister if in the making of his Order he indicated that the Oranmore collection was to be made specifically?

Sin ceist eile ar fad.

Ní hea. The Minister should not be trying to hide behind Mother Machree's skirt.

The Deputy should ask his own questions.

I was asking questions before the Minister knew where this House was.
