Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Electoral Acts Amendment.

194.

andMr. Timmins asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of a recent ruling of the Supreme Court regarding certain provisions of the Electoral Acts, he will state when it is intended to introduce the necessary amending legislation.

195.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he intends to introduce amending legislation arising from the recent decision of the Supreme Court that certain numbering of ballot papers in elections is unconstitutional.

196.

asked the Minister for Local Government what action he intends taking as a result of the recent High Court decision on the secrecy of the ballot.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose taking Questions Nos. 194, 195 and 196 together.

The implications of the court decision are being examined with a view to the early introduction of any amending legislation that may be necessary.

Noting the final part of the reply, may I ask is it possible to hold a general election without the introduction of the amending legislation?

Therefore we are adequately forewarned?
