Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Kerry Road.

234.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will inquire from Kerry County Council why men in receipt of high rates of unemployment assistance living along the Gowlane Road, at Castlecove, which is being improved, are not being employed on it instead of single men from outside the area.

The recruitment of persons for employment is a part of the administration of the local improvements scheme entrusted to county councils under the Local Government (Roads and Drainage) Act, 1968. I prefer to encourage councils in the exercise of these responsibilities rather than intervene in the way suggested in the question.
