Vol. 256 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - College of Nursing.

8.

andMr. Fox asked the Minister for Health if it is proposed to establish a College of Nursing; and, if so, what stage has been reached towards implementing the proposal.

I would draw the Deputies' attention to my reply to a similar question on the 5th August, 1971—Debates Volume 255, No. 19, column 3457. I would add only that I am aware that the matter is being actively pursued by An Bord Altranais.

Would the Minister consider recognising classes in vocational schools for the nursing profession?

That is another question altogether.

It is a burning question at present.

An Bord Altranais is in charge of nurse training and they are examining this question of setting up a College of Nursing.

Could the Minister say when the active consideration on his part will come to an end and some action will be taken?

I could not say.

Is the approval that has been given for a building at St. Mary's Hospital, Phoenix Park, for the College of Nursing?

That is for another purpose.

Why is it that the Minister is not in a position to tell us when——

It would require consideration. There is a question of whether the College of Nursing should not be associated with an academic institution. There is the question of how it should be formed and what kind of teaching should be undertaken. It requires quite detailed examination.
