Vol. 257 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Blind Pension Applicant.

17.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a person in County Monaghan (name supplied) has been refused a blind pension.

The claim in this case was disallowed on the ground that the claimant does not fulfil the statutory condition as to blindness.

The medical officer has certified that the person has not perfect eyesight and is eligible for a blind pension. May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary if the advice of general practitioners in these matters is completely disregarded and is of no consequence?

That is not correct. However, the representations made by the Deputy, with which he enclosed a doctor's certificate, are being investigated. When the matter is finalised I have no doubt the Deputy will be informed.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary indicate the definitions necessary with regard to the qualifications for a blind pension?

That appears to be a separate question.

Question No. 17 refers to an application for a pension by a person in County Monaghan.
