23.

asked the Minister for Finance if Ireland intends to take part in a European project designed to find methods of removing sulphur compounds from the atmosphere.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 21, 22 and 23 together.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the EEC-organised projects which were the subject of a ministerial meeting in Brussels on the 22nd and 23rd of last month.

Ireland is taking part in the project designed to find methods of identifying organic micro-pollutants in water and determining their concentration with a view to assessing the hazard due to their presence.

Ireland is not taking part in the project designed to standardise the existing methods of determining the character and properties of sewerage sludge prior to a comparative analysis of methods of treating and disposing of it.

Ireland does not intend to take part in the project designed to find methods of removing sulphur compounds from the atmosphere. Ireland is not participating in the two latter-mentioned projects because the cost of participation would outweigh any benefits. The research involved in these two projects is concerned with methods of analysis at a level of sophistication which is not necessary in this country.
