Vol. 257 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Statistics.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons with total incomes of over (a) £5,000, (b) £7,500 and (c) £10,000, as at the latest available date.

Presumably the Deputy's question refers to income as assessed for tax purposes.

Statistics in relation to income tax are not compiled in such a manner as would enable the information sought to be given. The Deputy's attention is, however, invited to the sur-tax statistics in Table 77, page 152, of the annual report of the Revenue Commissioners for the year ended March 31st, 1970. This table shows that, for the year of assessment 1969-70, there were 3,025 persons assessed to sur-tax whose total income as defined for purposes of that tax exceeded £5,000. The table does not provide information regarding the number of persons whose total income exceeded £7,500. It does, however, indicate that 1,090 persons had total income for the year 1969-70 in excess of £8,000 and 603 persons had total income for that year in excess of £10,000. The income assessable to sur-tax in 1969-70 would to a great extent have arisen in the preceding year.
