Vol. 257 No. 5

Written Answers. - Exports of Young Cattle.

79.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when and in what circumstances licensing control on the export of young cattle was first introduced and the reason for its introduction.

There is no legislation aimed specifically at controlling the export of young cattle. From 1946 to 1953 the export of cattle to countries other than Britain and Northern Ireland was prohibited except under licence under the terms of the Cattle (Export Prohibition) Order, 1946 (S.R.O. No. 83 of 1946). In 1953 when the position in regard to orders made during the war and post-war years was being reviewed it was decided to incorporate this control in a general order, namely, the Agricultural Products (Restriction of Export) Order, 1953 (S.I. No. 234 of 1953) which was made on 30th June, 1953. Export control has been necessary to enable the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries to regulate exports of cattle to destinations other than Britain and Northern Ireland so as to meet our obligations under trade agreements as regards the supply of live cattle to the UK.
