Vol. 258 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Northern Ireland Situation.

8.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is satisfied that the interchange with the British representatives which followed the recent address to the Council of Europe by the Minister for Justice will not jeopardise relations between the two countries in the interests of promoting peace in Northern Ireland.

The Government are satisfied that the statement and subsequent remarks made in the Council of Europe on 20th January by the Minister for Justice accurately represent the Government's views. Relations between Ireland and Britain would not be jeopardised if the British Government took greater notice of this Government's views on current British policies in relation to the North. I am satisfied that stating our views publicly is in the best interests of both Ireland and Britain in the present serious situation.

Would the Minister explain why the Minister for Justice was asked to apologise?

That is a separate question.

I do not think he was.

He was telling the truth and should not have been asked to apologise.

There was a question in reference to a point of order. He was not asked for an apology.

There are stupid people still in the Council of Europe.
