Vol. 258 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Playing of National Anthem.

51.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of a report (details supplied) that the National Anthem is not played at three Government subsidised theatres—the Abbey, the Peacock and the Gate—"as a matter of policy"; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the practice of playing the National Anthem at each performance in the theatres mentioned by the Deputy has recently been discontinued. In future the playing of the Anthem will be reserved for special occasions such as when a State dignitary officially attends a performance. The new arrangement corresponds to accepted international practice. In the circumstances, I see no reason to intervene in this matter.
