Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Marketing Co-ordination.

86.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will indicate the plans of each of the promotional and marketing bodies under the aegis of his Department in relation to the establishment of offices, the development of contacts and the processing of information in relation to each of the member countries of the EEC.

87.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if there is likely to be co-operation between the various promotional and marketing bodies under the aegis of his Department in relation to the staffing, siting and servicing of offices in the major capitals of the EEC countries; and if he has issued any recommendation to those bodies in that regard.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 86 and 87 together.

In the EEC the statutory position as centralised exporters now held by some of these bodies will cease but they will, of course, be free to continue centralised exporting on a voluntary basis. The general activities and arrangements of the kind mentioned by the Deputy are matters for decision by the bodies themselves. In the course of the negotiations for accession to the EEC my Department were in consultation with the bodies and consultations with them are continuing.

Would the Minister agree that better economy of effort would result from greater consultation on certain functions in relation to these marketing boards?

The general idea to which the Deputy refers is a good one. It would lead to more economy of manpower.
