Vol. 258 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weights and Measures Inspectors.

43.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the functions of inspectors of weights and measures extend to metric measurements.

The functions of weights and measures inspectors cover both imperial and metric weights and measures.

Is the Minister aware that a committee which keeps track of price increases and weights and measures received a reply from the weights and measures section of Dublin Corporation saying that their writ extends only to measurements of imperial measure? This seems to be in direct contradiction to what the Minister has said.

I am unaware of the letter to which the Deputy has referred.

Is the Minister aware that in a report in The Irish Times, dated 10th January last, it was stated Ireland had signed an agreement to adopt metric measurements and that it will not come into operation until 1979?

I know that the phasing in of metric measurements is not compulsory as of now. I am endeavouring to encourage various elements of industry to transfer to this type of measurement.

Is the Minister satisfied that the inspectors of weights and measures have jurisdiction over matters other than imperial measures?
