Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Agricultural Show Societies.

14.

andMr. Timmins asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that tax demands are being made on agricultural show societies and if, in view of the adverse effect of such demands, he will exempt such societies from taxation.

Agricultural societies are exempt from income tax in respect of any profit or gains arising from an exhibition or show held for the purposes of the society. They are, however, liable to tax in the ordinary way in respect of income from other sources received by them, for example, investment income. This position has not been altered since 1925.

I understand from the Revenue Commissioners that, in practice, the great majority of agricultural societies are not liable for any tax, and in the exceptional case where liability arises it rarely amounts to more than £50.
