Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - County Donegal Pier.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is intended to proceed with repairs to Burtonport Pier, County Donegal.

The Commissioners of Public Works are not responsible for repairs to Burtonport Pier. The commissioners have, however, proposals for the construction of a new jetty at Burtonport and arrangements for the early start of this work are well advanced.

Can we take it that it will commence this year?

I would hope that the work will commence within the Financial year but certainly it will commence in April.

I meant within the calendar year.

In reply to a question put down by Deputy Delap on the 28th October, I said that all going well it was hoped to start work on Burtonport harbour early this year. At that time I hoped we could start it about this particular time. Apparently there has been a hold-up in relation to the supply of steel piling. We have got the county council contribution of £45,000 which they got from the Local Loans Fund and it is necessary to erect an office for storage accommodation and assembly plant et cetera on the site. I understand that herrings are running at the moment and it is not desirable that this work should be started immediately. I would say April at the very latest.

You will conclude the work in 12 months?

It is at least 12 months work. It is a £183,000 scheme.

The Parliamentary Secretary hopes to have it finished this time next year?
