Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Creamery Industry Rationalisation.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the Government's policy in relation to the future of the Dairy Disposal Board.

Certain of the Dairy Disposal Company's interests are at present being transferred to co-operative ownership and it is intended that such transfers should continue in the context of rationalisation of the creamery industry. It is envisaged that the company should also become associated in a development capacity with co-operative societies which may be unable from their own resources immediately to undertake the rationalisation of the creamery industry and the provision of processing facilities.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of creameries envisaged for this country at the end of the present rationalisation programme.

Plans for creamery rationalisation envisage that ultimately there would be about 18 large creamery groups. Each of these groups would have at least one central creamery but the precise number of creameries would depend primarily on decisions taken by the amalgamated co-operative society in each group or in some cases the Dairy Disposal Company.
