Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Portlaoise Prison Facilities.

36.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline in detail the arrangements for the medical and spiritual attention of prisoners in Portlaoise prison.

The medical needs of the prisoners in Portlaoise prison are attended to by the prison medical officer. Serious medical cases are treated in hospital.

There are chaplains for Catholic and Church of Ireland prisoners, and chaplains for other prisoners are called in whenever required.

37.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Justice if it is a fact that prisoners in Portlaoise prison are not provided with underclothing and whether they are required to take exercise in wet and frosty weather without overcoats; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Every prisoner is supplied with underclothing.

Overcoats are not part of the regular issue to prisoners but are allowed for outdoor work in severe weather or on the recommendation of the medical officer. Prisoners are not required to take outdoor exercise in inclement weather.
