Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Violence and Arms Prosecutions.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions taken in the last 12 months in respect of (a) incitement to violence and (b) illegal possession of arms, ammunition and explosive substances.

During the 12 months ended 11th February, 1972, a total of five persons were charged with inciting others to commit offences that are either of a violent nature in themselves or are calculated to lead to acts of violence.

In regard to the second part of the question, the position is that a special check of records kept at local level would have to be made to compile the information asked for. Statistics so compiled would include offences such as routine prosecutions for failure to renew firearm certificates for sporting firearms. I assume that the Deputy would not be particularly interested in statistics that would include such prosecutions.
