Vol. 258 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Local Authority Posts.

95.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider introducing a regulation whereby persons with service in the Defence Forces will get preference for posts with local authorities, other qualifications being equal.

Under existing regulations, age concessions are given to ex-servicemen who are applicants for certain posts in the local authority service such as clerical officer, library assistant, rent collector, and so on. Apart from these appointments, local authorities have been exhorted that, other things being equal, they should give preference to persons who have had at least five years' service in the permanent Defence Forces.

Would the Minister say if any age allowance is given for members of the Defence Forces?

I think so. Generally such candidates may deduct from their ages any period of service they have given in the Defence Forces subject to a maximum deduction of six years.
