Vol. 259 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Winter Milk Production.

23.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider giving an incentive for winter milk production so that expensive buildings and equipment could be kept in production all the year round.

Winter production of milk for the liquid trade already receives an incentive in the higher prices payable for supplies during the winter period. As regards milk for manufacturing purposes, it is possible that the recent substantial increase in creamery milk price and the further increases which can be expected following Ireland's entry into the EEC will stimulate production during the winter period. Under EEC conditions, however, a special Exchequer subsidy on milk produced during that period will not be permissible.
