Vol. 259 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Footwear Industry.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what special steps he now intends to take to help the footwear industry in the light of the report recently published on the matter.

As, no doubt, the Deputy has noted, the committee on industrial progress has indicated that it considers that the capacity of the footwear industry must be adjusted to the markets available to it and that this requires that a rationalisation process be undertaken as a matter of extreme urgency. The committee considers that the responsibility for undertaking this task rests primarily on proprietors and managements.

My Department is arranging for early consultations with the industry in regard to the recommendations in the report.
