asked the Minister for Local Government in respect of 1969-70 and 1970-71 (a) the total expenditure on roads; (b) the amount provided from rates and the amount provided by Government grants; and (c) the corresponding figures for Northern Ireland.

In 1969-70 we spent a total of £19.3 million on roads, of which £9.2 million was provided from rates, and £10.1 million was provided by State grants. The corresponding figure for Northern Ireland was £20.4 million, of which £4.9 million was provided from rates, and £15.5 million was provided from State grants. Comparative figures in respect of the year 1970-71 are not yet available.
