Vol. 259 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Drainage Scheme.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of employees who have been dismissed since 1st January, 1972, on the Feale drainage scheme; the reason for their dismissal; and if it is proposed to re-employ them.

Maintenance work on the Feale drainage scheme the cost of which is borne by the Kerry County Council is carried out on a seasonal basis. The season normally runs from the months of May to November approximately. This year, because of favourable weather and other conditions, it was possible to retain men for a longer period. Of 20 seasonal workers who started in May, 1971, 15 were retained up to 3rd February, 1972, and one to 16th February, 1972, when work in their respective areas was completed. Four are still retained in an area where suitable work remains to be done.

This year's seasonal workers will be considered for employment at the beginning of next season if they are available and recommended by their employment exchange.

How many men were made redundant on this scheme some weeks ago?

There were 20 seasonal workers. All but five were let go on 3rd February, 1972, and another was let go on 16th February, 1972. Four seasonal workers are still employed and we have a permanent staff of 13.

How many men were notified by those in charge of the job that they were redundant and that they should go to the exchange and draw their redundancy money?

Redundancy is not mentioned in the question.

I am asking the Parliamentary Secretary now.

That is a separate question. I do not think redundancy arises because these workers know it is seasonal work.
