Vol. 259 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Livestock Breeding Consultative Council.

37.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if it is intended to create a livestock breeding consultative council; and, if so, if he will indicate its purpose, terms of reference and proposed membership.

I am establishing a cattle advisory committee for the purpose of keeping cattle breeding policy under review. The committee will be asked to examine and make recommendations on all aspects of cattle breeding, including import policy. Its membership will be about 14 or 15 and will comprise representatives of the interests mainly concerned.

Could the Minister say if the Cattle Breeding Consultative Council will meet as infrequently as the Livestock Consultative Council?

I can assure the Deputy that it is my intention that this advisory committee will be a much different body. The Deputy will also be aware that there are large areas in which there is an important tactical need to tackle this question of cattle breeding and to tackle it in a business-like way. I propose to do that with the assistance of this committee.
