Vol. 259 No. 8

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef Subsidy Scheme.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what changes, if any, have been made in the beef subsidy scheme during the past two years.

The principal change made in the terms of the beef cattle incentive scheme during the past two years was that in 1970 the rate of grant was increased from £12 for each qualified cow to £21 for the first qualified cow, £19 for the next and £16 for each subsequent qualified cow. Some minor changes relating to the administration of the Scheme were also made.

As regards the export guarantee scheme for beef the support payments for exports of beef to Britain were fixed early in 1969 at 0.52p (1¼d) per lb. below the level on which UK deficiency payments were made on fat cattle. As from the 31st January, 1972, this differential was reduced to 0.104p (1¼d) per lb. Proposals for seasonal adjustments in subsidy rates announced in March, 1971, did not come into operation by reason of the low level of deficiency payments since last April.
