asked the Taoiseach the value of Ireland's exports to and imports from (a) Japan, (b) Norway and (c) the USSR for the most recent 12-month period.

In 1971 imports from Japan were valued at £9.2 million, from Norway £4.3 million and USSR £3 million. The corresponding export figures were £4.2 million, £1.2 million and £0.2 million, respectively.

asked the Taoiseach if he will list the countries with which Ireland has had (a) a favourable trade balance and (b) an unfavourable trade balance over the latest five-year period.

Ireland had an excess of exports over imports, over the five-year period 1967 to 1971, with the Six Counties, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta and Gozo, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bahrein, Jordan, Syria, Singapore, Thailand, Ethiopia including Eritrea, Mauritius, United Arab Republic, Canary Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala, Venezuela, Uruguay, Cameroun and Philippines.

There was an import excess with all other principal countries during the same period.
