Vol. 259 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Payments System.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether the present system of creamery payments so largely based on butter fat content is likely to be superseded by more sophisticated methods including protein content; and what steps have been taken towards the development and provision of testing equipment on these lines.

While it is possible that the system of payment for creamery milk on the basis of butterfat content may, at some future date, be modified to take account also of other constituents of the milk, the present position is that the dairy industry generally has not sought any change in that direction and it does not appear that such a change would offer advantages to Irish dairy farmers. The second part of the question does not, therefore, arise at this stage.
