Vol. 261 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Vocational School.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the unsuitable conditions for teachers and pupils in the town of Wexford vocational education school; if he will indicate his decision on the application by the committee for the second stage of the extension; and whether he intends to receive a deputation from the committee and the Deputies from the constituency on this matter.

Approval has been given for a further extension to the school in question. The size of the extension will depend on the level of enrolments which can reasonably be expected in September next and this is at present the subject of discussions with the acting chief executive officer.

I feel that any question of a deputation to see me in the matter should await the outcome of discussions I have mentioned.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary referring to the first or second extension?

I cannot quite say. It is whatever proposal is before the Minister at present from the vocational educational committee. There may be two extensions involved but I know that the discussions ranged over the whole question of extension to the school.

It is peculiar that the question of extension should be the subject of discussion between his Department or himself and the chief executive officer because the CEO, I think, has written to some of the public representatives. I got a letter in any case in which he says he was directed by his committee to seek this deputation to the Minister.

All I can say is that the building unit of the Department expect in the coming week to conclude this discussion with the acting chief executive officer. The Deputy may take it from that that the discussions are proceeding.

And that they will be favourable.

I would hope so.
