Vol. 261 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Water Supply.

9.

asked the Minister for Lands if he would request the Land Commission to erect a water pump at Woodquay, Tuam, County Galway, as they were carrying out a rearrangement scheme in that area and the participants in the rearrangement scheme were in need of a water supply.

A scheme for the rearrangement of a number of holdings in Woodquay was operated in November last. As part of this scheme, three tenants were offered financial assistance up to £10,000 towards the erection by them of new houses. If the tenants avail themselves of this assistance the question of the provision of further assistance towards the installation of water in the new buildings can then be considered.

As regards a general water supply for the area, the best hope would seem to lie in the establishment of a group water supply scheme.

Does the Minister not think that it would be appropriate for the Land Commission to erect a water pump in that area now seeing they are working there still? They have done this in the past.

It is up to the tenants to build their houses first. They will get grants for a water supply if they do.

In many rearrangement schemes of the Land Commission in the past they have laid on a communal water supply for the people involved in the schemes?

Yes, but usually the tenants built the houses. It is only after the houses have been built——

But in cases where the Land Commission built houses there was a water supply laid on.

They do not seem to be anxious to do it in this case unless the tenants build the houses.

Would the Minister request the Land Commission to do it?
