Vol. 261 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Woodwork Teachers' Examination.

14.

asked the Minister for Education why a minimum age limit of 20 is imposed for the woodwork teachers' training examination which is excluding apprentices who have passed their junior and senior examinations prior to that age; and whether he will change this regulation so as not to exclude suitable candidates on age grounds alone.

A minimum age of 20 years is specified for entry to the course for the training of teachers of woodwork to ensure that candidates have had an opportunity of acquiring the degree of experience and maturity deemed essential for this course, and for the type of teaching they will be engaged on when trained.

I have no plans for reducing this age limit.
