Vol. 261 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Tenant Purchase Scheme.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce a more favourable purchase scheme for the tenants of Barrett's Place, Macroom, County Cork, in view of the fact that some time ago similar houses in the same place were purchased by the tenants at less than half the price now demanded.

I have no power to vary the prices in an approved purchase scheme, as suggested. It is for the local authority to decide whether or not to make a purchase scheme for their houses. Where a local authority decide to make a scheme, the prices of the houses must be based on the market or replacement value, less the appropriate discount for length of tenancy. Macroom Urban Council have an approved scheme, which is valid up to 30th June, 1972, for houses in their estate, including those at Barrett's Place. The prices specified in that scheme are the lowest which could legally have been approved.
