Vol. 261 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Road.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the bad condition of the road leading from Knock Shrine, County Mayo, to the local school where polling took place on 10th May last; and what steps he proposes taking to remedy the matter.

As this is not a public road it is not maintained by the road authority, Mayo County Council. It is open to the council to determine whether it is an appropriate case for the exercise of their powers to declare a road to be a public road. Alternatively, it is open to interested parties to make application to the council for a grant under the local improvements scheme.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not appreciate that the road is within 100 yards of Knock Shrine, and even on the day of the poll when I happened to be there, people could not turn out to vote because of the bad condition of this road?

The Deputy is knocking at the wrong door. It is a matter for the county council.
