Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - UNCTAD Meeting.

29.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the proposals put forward by the Irish Government's spokesman at the recent UNCTAD meeting in Chile.

While the Irish delegation to the third UNCTAD meeting participated actively in the work of the conference and supported many of the resolutions adopted by the conference, they did not table any formal proposal for adoption by the conference.

To what did we subscribe? Did we subscribe to any major agreement at that conference which will affect Irish national trade policy?

I think we will have a report on the UNCTAD after a while. Ambassador Cremin, our permanent representative at the UN, headed the delegation. I was unable to go because I was engaged at home. He made two statements at the session of the conference. Other members of our delegation participated in committee work. We will see if we can have a report of all the work done but it will take some time.

Does the Minister know whether any undertakings were entered into which would affect policy in this country?

Maybe the Minister should have gone.

It was about the time of the referendum. We referred not only to our own support for the idea of spreading the wealth of the world a bit wider—the Deputy may have been here when we had a discussion—but also to our hope that our participation in the EEC will enable us to do more. These were the two main lines on which the ambassador spoke.
