Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dyslexia Survey.

51.

asked the Minister for Education if any survey has been carried out in the Republic or is intended to be carried out into the incidence of dyslexia among school children; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not considered necessary to undertake a general national survey for the purpose of the discovery and treatment of the specific reading difficulties among school children which may be denoted by the term dyslexia. The child and school health services, with the assistance of the school staff, enable any individual child so affected to be discovered at an early date. Treatment for the handicap would be provided as part of the service available through the general arrangements for remedial education.

A class for teachers for the recognition and treatment of specific learning defects is at present being conducted by the director of clinical psychology, Child Guidance Clinic, Orwell Road, Dublin.
