Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Economic and Social Committee.

4.

asked the Taoiseach how the Irish members of the European Economic and Social Committee will be appointed.

In accordance with the relevant provisions of the EEC Treaty, the Irish members of the Community's Economic and Social Committee will be appointed by the Council of Ministers from a list furnished by the Government to the Council which will contain twice as many names as the nine seats allotted to Irish nationals on the Committee.

How will the Taoiseach compose this list which he will submit to the Council of Ministers? Has this been done yet?

No, the list has not been composed. I indicated here quite recently that it was intended to have such consultations with voluntary and other organisations as would appear to be necessary. Broadly speaking, the people who will be appointed are expected to represent a broad spectrum of employers, workers and social activity within a member country. That will be the sort of spectrum we propose to consult.

Is it proposed to consult with other people in this House about the composition of the list?

No, with the organisations that represent the interests that will be on the committee.

Not with anybody in this House?
