Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - General Practitioners' Hospital Facilities.

10.

asked the Minister for Health his policy in respect of giving limited hospital bed facilities to general practitioners.

The report of the consultative council on the general hospital services recommended that hospitals classified as community health centres and district hospitals should be staffed by general practitioners. I have accepted these recommendations in principle.

As a first step in the direction of such wider access by general practitioners to hospital care facilities, negotiations have been proceeding with the Irish Medical Association and the Medical Union on the question of the access of local general practitioners to maternity units in district hospitals. I am hopeful that these negotiations may soon result in an agreed basis for such access.
