Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Marketing.

43.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the study of the efficiency of marketing cattle in different forms, that is, as live cattle, carcase beef or processed beef, announced in paragraph 5.39 of the Third Programme for Economic and Social Development has yet been completed by An Foras Talúntais; and, if so, if he will indicate its conclusions and the action taken thereon.

An Foras Talúntais have informed me that this project is included in their research programme for the current year and that work on it has commenced.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me why, as this project was announced in the Third Programme published in 1969, it did not start before now, in view of the importance of the project?

It is not possible to introduce these things immediately after they are announced. It takes some little time. A lot of time has not elapsed since this was announced. Research is going on and a special committee has been appointed comprising representatives of the trade, the institute, the Pigs and Bacon Commission and the Department.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree this Programme was from 1969 to 1972 and that it is odd that something included in such a Programme should not be commenced until half way through the last year of the Programme?

I did not say it has not commenced. It had commenced on a relatively small scale——

When did it commence and will there be any results?
