Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dairy Industry.

50.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a newspaper report (details supplied) of the intention on the part of two leading concerns in the British dairy manufacturing industry to expand their operations in Ireland in order to profit from the increased prices for dairy produce in the EEC; if he is aware that this move is viewed with concern by the Irish dairy industry; whether his Department were consulted for approval in this matter; and the effect it will have on the home dairy industry.

I have seen the newspaper report mentioned. Neither concern has informed my Department of any plans to expand operations here.

The Irish dairy industry, being almost entirely in local ownership, is, of course, in a position to develop in its own best interests, especially if, as I have frequently urged, the creamery co-operatives press ahead with the necessary measures of rationalisation and reorganisation of the industry.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me if such enterprises set up in this country will require licences from his Department?

They will.

He will have, therefore, complete control of the situation?

Complete control of the situation.
