Vol. 262 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Girls' School.

27.

asked the Minister for Education if it is intended to close Saint Francis Xavier national school for girls, Dorset Street, Dublin; and, if so, if he will state the alternative accommodation arranged for the pupils attending this school; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of the future provision to be made for the education of the pupils at present attending Saint Francis Xavier girls' national school is being examined by my Department. No firm decision has as yet been taken in the matter.

Is the Minister not aware that the parents were told they would have to find places for their children because the school was closing? Does the Minister not agree that the Department should guide and help the parents in finding places for the children and that this was not done in this case?

The Department are concerned in this matter. I pointed out that no firm decision has yet been taken and I would also point out that the initiative in connection with the closing of this school did not come from the Department.

Is the Minister aware that other schools in the vicinity of this school are already overcrowded? Is he further aware that this school has been allowed to go into neglect and is quite capable of accommodating many more pupils than at present?

No. I do not accept what the Deputy says.
