Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Insurance.

151.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that car and lorry owners who fail to get reasonable insurance cover through the ordinary channels have to wait three months for a reply from his Department when their cases are referred to it; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

I am not aware that this is general experience. Cases are reported to me for the purpose of being investigated by the motor insurers in accordance with an agreement made with them. While time must be allowed to insurers for this review, there is no general delay on their part in reaching a conclusion. Some cases of exceptional difficulty or complexity may take longer than others, but my Department endeavour to expedite a decision by the insurers in such cases.
