Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Price Index.

11.

asked the Taoiseach if any supermarkets receive prior notification from the CSO of intention to make sample retail purchases prior to compilation of the consumer price index.

The consumer price index is calculated in respect of one particular day each quarter—the middle Tuesday of the months of February, May, August and November. Price quotations are collected for the same set of items in the same shops each quarter. A representative panel of approximately 2,500 shops, including supermarkets, throughout the country voluntarily co-operates in this inquiry.

Pricing in the Dublin area is undertaken by Central Statistics Office officials. To facilitate their task the CSO notify about 40 large shops, including 19 supermarkets, a few days in advance that accredited officials will be calling to complete this pricing operation in their premises.

Pricing in the rest of the country is undertaken by local officials of the Department of Labour attached to employment exchanges and branch employment offices. It is understood that no prior official notification is given in these cases.
