Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postmen's Working Week.

185.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to provide a five-day week for postmen.

The majority of postmen already have a five-day week, and there was agreement at the Departmental Conciliation Council to introduce it for postmen generally subject to certain conditions. A five-day week will be introduced for the remaining postmen according as schemes of attendances complying with these conditions can be devised and agreed with the staff at each individual office concerned.

May I ask when the introduction of the five-day week will be expedited throughout the country?

It will be brought in as speedily as we possibly can do it, or as fast as we can go.

Within three or four months, I assume.

I could not honestly say.
