Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

19.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if any documents of a secret nature relating to NATO are being made available to this country; whether this is being done as a result of a request from the Government; and whether any conditions relating to military or defence involvement are attached to the granting of this facility.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The other two parts, therefore, do not arise.

20.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the position of this country as regards the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation when Ireland joins the EEC; whether this country will have access to NATO decisions and policy documents; if a special arrangement will be negotiated between this country and NATO in view of Ireland's desire for non-alignment to military blocs; and whether any pressure has been brought to bear for Ireland to join NATO.

As I said in reply to a question on 25th January, there will be no military or defence commitments involved in Ireland's entry into the EEC. There is, therefore, no question of our joining NATO or negotiating any arrangement with NATO, nor has it been suggested from any quarter that we do so.
