Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Currency Alignment.

36.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the statement made by President Pompidou regarding the steps to be taken by Britain and this country regarding the alignment of their currencies before formally joining the EEC; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen reports of comments about fixed currency parities made by the French President in Bonn on 4th July, 1972, at the end of his meeting with the German Chancellor. I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave on 29th June to a number of questions about the floating of the Irish £. As I then indicated, the floating is intended as a temporary measure and it is the Government's intention to arrange for a return to a fixed relationship against other currencies as well as sterling as soon as conditions permit. I have nothing further to add at this stage.
