Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trading Stamps.

99.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce legislation to prohibit generally the issue of trading stamps for retail sales.

I indicated in reply to previous questions about trading stamps that I would await the Restrictive Practices Commission's report of inquiry into the grocery trade before deciding what to do. I have recently received this report and am studying its implications in regard to this matter.

May I ask the Minister if he would be sympathetically disposed towards introducing legislation to prevent the use of trading stamps which most authoritative observers regard as the greatest gimmick of all time and which simply push up the price of goods under the guise of the consumer getting an advantage? The Minister knows that these trading stamps are outlawed in many countries and should be outlawed in this country.

My answer is "Yes".
