Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mountjoy Prison Reconstruction.

112.

asked the Minister for Justice to what extent repairs at Mountjoy Prison have been undertaken to date; and when it is expected that the section under repair will be in use again.

113.

asked the Minister for Justice the extent of progress to date in the reconstruction of Mountjoy Prison.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 112 and 113 together.

The repairs are proceeding as quickly as possible at Mountjoy but, in so far as they concern prison security, it would be undesirable, at present, to disclose the exact extent of the work done. I can say, however, that the catering facilities have been restored and that full sanitary and washing facilities will again be available by the end of the month.

As regards reconstruction, a radical modernisation of the prison is proposed and the design work for this is proceeding.

Could the Minister say when the actual work on building will commence? I think the design has been completed.

I think it has. I think it will start within the next month or two months.

Will the Minister keep pressure on the Office of Public Works to make sure of that?

I will, indeed.
