Vol. 263 No. 1

Death of Member: Expression of Sympathy.

Before the commencement of this session of the Dáil, it is fitting that we should pay a special tribute to the memory of Deputy Patrick Hogan, whose death occurred so unexpectedly during the adjournment. Guím suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.

From his election to Dáil Éireann in 1961 to his death on the 6th October, Deputy Hogan devoted himself unsparingly and unselfishly to the service of his constituents, and to the work of the Dáil. His work as chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts was an outstanding example of the conscientious discharge of his public duties for which the Dáil must always be indebted to him. He was also a very active member of the local county council and urban district council.

Surgeon Hogan had already achieved an eminent position in his own profession long before his election to Dáil Éireann. His contributions to our deliberations here—especially in the spheres of health, local government and agriculture—were based on firsthand knowledge and practical experience which won for them the close attention and deep respect which they merited. He was a committed and dedicated European.

The late Deputy was a man of wide interests which extended well beyond his chosen field of medical practice. A man of great compassion, he constantly strove to improve the lot of his fellowman and gave unstintingly of his counsel wherever it was sought.

Through his death, Dáil Éireann, the people of his constituency, and his party, all have suffered a great loss.

I would ask you, a Cheann Comhairle, on behalf of all the Members of the House, to convey to the late Deputy's relatives our deepest sympathy in their bereavement. Go dtuga Dia gach cabhair dóibh ina mbris.

Members rose in their places.
